Landscape of city of Okutama

Community-based integrated care in rural Japan—Impressions from Okutama (Tokyo)

About to two hours by train west from the center of Tokyo lies Okutama, a small town with a population of only 4,800 people despite covering a large area of 225 km², or one tenth of the area of Tokyo Prefecture. It is one of many towns in rural Japan that is strongly affected by demographic change. Together with a group of researchers, members of our DIJ sustainability team visited the area to learn more about community-based integrated care on site.
